J.-C.) r\u00e9gna sur le royaume du Pont, autour de la mer Noire. Il r\u00e9sista longtemps aux Romains, allant jusqu\u2019\u00e0 imaginer un projet d\u2019invasion de l\u2019Italie. Comme la pi\u00e8ce de Racine, l\u2019op\u00e9ra de Mozart fait la part belle aux intrigues amoureuses des deux fils de Mithridate, Xiphar\u00e8s et Pharnace.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019histoire d\u00e9bute avec la mort annonc\u00e9e de Mithridate. Alors que le pays est en guerre avec Rome, les deux fr\u00e8res r\u00e9clament le tr\u00f4ne et la main d\u2019Aspasie, la princesse grecque promise \u00e0 Mithridate. Aspasie, elle, semble sensible aux avances de Pharnace&#8230; Le retour inattendu du roi provoque la panique dans ce triangle amoureux. Trahisons, revirements et coups bas se suivront jusqu\u2019au happy-end final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MONTER MITHRIDATE AUJOURD\u2019HUI : L&rsquo;INTENTION DRAMATURGIQUE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Comment raconter l\u2019histoire de Mithridate, qui passe de la place de Nymph\u00e9e, \u00e0 un camp militaire et de jardins suspendus \u00e0 la prison, tout en restant fid\u00e8le au lieu unique de la trag\u00e9die classique ? \u00ab <em><strong>Le seul lieu clos qui nous permettait d\u2019inventer tous les autres lieux, c\u2019est le th\u00e9\u00e2tre lui-m\u00eame<\/strong><\/em> \u00bb, explique Cl\u00e9ment Hervieu-L\u00e9ger. \u00ab <em>Il n\u2019y a qu\u2019au th\u00e9\u00e2tre que l\u2019on est compl\u00e8tement enferm\u00e9 et o\u00f9 l\u2019on peut en m\u00eame temps voir le rivage, les jardins suspendus&#8230; Il ne s\u2019agit pas de faire figurer ces lieux avec vraisemblance, mais de nous les faire r\u00eaver<\/em> \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Autre enjeu : la distribution. Mozart a \u00e9crit pour des castrats &#8211; tous les r\u00f4les d\u2019hommes dans Mithridate \u00e9taient chant\u00e9s par eux, et sont aujourd\u2019hui interpr\u00e9t\u00e9s par des femmes. Comment rendre ce travestissement cr\u00e9dible ?<\/p>\n<p>Cl\u00e9ment Hervieu-L\u00e9ger se joue de ces enjeux en cr\u00e9ant une double fiction. \u00ab<em> Imaginons une troupe d\u2019acteurs enferm\u00e9e dans un th\u00e9\u00e2tre, en temps de guerre, et qui d\u00e9cide de jouer Mithridate. Mais, en temps de guerre, qui reste-t-il ? Les enfants, les femmes, et des hommes bless\u00e9s qui ne sont pas partis au front.<\/em> \u00bb Le travestissement est alors indispensable. Lorsque Mithridate retourne du front romain, mortellement bless\u00e9, les deux histoires se rejoignent. \u00ab <em>C\u2019est \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 que le th\u00e9\u00e2tre a lieu et que ce miracle nous \u00e9meut. Faire du th\u00e9\u00e2tre aujourd\u2019hui est un acte de r\u00e9sistance. Il faut continuer \u00e0 jouer la musique co\u00fbte que co\u00fbte<\/em>. \u00bb C\u2019est d\u2019autant plus fort que l\u2019oeuvre de Mozart se termine par un bref quintette final qui chante \u00ab <em>R\u00e9sistons \u00e0 Rome, et sauvons la libert\u00e9<\/em> \u00bb. Il est essentiel. Nous ne sommes plus dans l\u2019histoire de Mithridate, mais devant des artistes qui, sur sc\u00e8ne, disent : \u00ab <em>R\u00e9sistons, et c\u2019est l\u00e0, notre libert\u00e9<\/em> \u00bb. Du velours rouge fatigu\u00e9, quelques rang\u00e9es de fauteuils, un plafond qui laisse percer la lumi\u00e8re par endroits&#8230; la guerre est pass\u00e9e par l\u00e0. Dans cet endroit \u00e0 moiti\u00e9 d\u00e9moli, il reste des bouts de b\u00e2ti, d\u2019accessoires, de vieilles \u00e9p\u00e9es, des jupons, des projecteurs laiss\u00e9s ici et l\u00e0, des couvertures.. De quoi jouer tout le r\u00e9pertoire !<\/p>\n<p>Ce que d\u00e9cident donc de faire les \u00ab habitants \u00bb du th\u00e9\u00e2tre.<\/p>\n<p>La d\u00e9cision de situer l\u2019action dans un th\u00e9\u00e2tre permet de d\u00e9passer la question de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Entre la Rome antique, le XVIIe si\u00e8cle de Racine, le XVIIIe de Mozart et une esth\u00e9tique plus contemporaine, Cl\u00e9ment Hervieu-L\u00e9ger a fait ce dernier choix. Dans un th\u00e9\u00e2tre o\u00f9 tout est possible, il suffit d\u2019un bout de costume d\u2019\u00e9poque ajust\u00e9 sur un costume contemporain pour r\u00eaver \u00e0
