production. Dot\u00e9e d\u2019une intensit\u00e9 dramatique digne des plus grandes trag\u00e9dies, la musique de Haendel donne vie \u00e0 des personnages \u00e9mouvants et humains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Au Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Champs-Elys\u00e9es<\/strong>, l\u2019histoire de la princesse romaine convertie au christianisme sera men\u00e9e par cinq interpr\u00e8tes d\u2019exception dans une nouvelle mise en sc\u00e8ne du britannique Stephen Langridge.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nL\u2019HISTOIRE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La romaine Theodora convertie au christianisme refuse de c\u00e9l\u00e9brer les dieux romains et l\u2019empereur Diocl\u00e9tien, et se voit jet\u00e9e en p\u00e2ture \u00e0 la luxure des soldats romains. Dydimus, soldat converti \u00e9pris de la belle, tente de plaider la cl\u00e9mence aupr\u00e8s du gouverneur Valens, mais en vain. Il fait alors \u00e9vader la jeune fille de la prison en \u00e9changeant ses habits avec elle. Didymus est pris et jug\u00e9 pour trahison, Theodora rejoint son sauveur afin de partager son sort, et le couple est condamn\u00e9 \u00e0 mort.<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nDES TEMPS ANCIENS A AUJOURD&rsquo;HUI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>L\u2019histoire de Theodora et Didymus se passe \u00e0 Antioche, une ancienne ville grecque qui se trouve aujourd\u2019hui en Turquie, presque \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re avec la Syrie. Tour \u00e0 tour grecque, romaine, chr\u00e9tienne, syrienne, byzantine, turque, Antioche a toujours connu une diversit\u00e9 ethnico-religieuse qui en fit le th\u00e9\u00e2tre de bien des drames, de la premi\u00e8re croisade au g\u00e9nocide arm\u00e9nien. L\u2019action se passe \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque de Diocl\u00e9tien, un despote qui a initi\u00e9 l\u2019une des plus terrifiantes campagnes de pers\u00e9cution contre les chr\u00e9tiens dans l\u2019Empire Romain. C\u2019est un monde brutal, autocrate et d\u00e9cadent ; un monde opulent o\u00f9 l\u2019argent est presque un objet de culte et o\u00f9 quiconque qui ne partage pas les croyances officielles risque d\u2019\u00eatre tu\u00e9 ou tortur\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Dans cette \u0153uvre, il s\u2019agit autant de ce que l\u2019on rejette que de ce \u00e0 quoi on choisit de croire. En un sens, savoir si les personnages dans l\u2019op\u00e9ra sont chr\u00e9tiens ou non n\u2019est pas important. Ce qui l\u2019est, c\u2019est qu\u2019ils rejettent cette soci\u00e9t\u00e9 violente, autocratique et d\u00e9cadente.<\/p>\n<p>La situation o\u00f9 le lien entre la religion et la structure politique se resserre et est renforc\u00e9 par une violence grandissante n\u2019est pas sans faire \u00e9cho \u00e0 l\u2019actualit\u00e9. Par le biais d\u2019un d\u00e9cor d\u2019architecture abstraite extr\u00eamement mobile, Stephen Langridge recherche la fluidit\u00e9 des encha\u00eenements entre les tableaux. Certains seront r\u00e9alis\u00e9s en un \u00e9clair et d\u2019autres, au contraire, au ralenti.<\/p>\n<p>Le d\u00e9cor pourrait \u00e9voquer Antioche \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque de Diocl\u00e9tien ou la ville d\u2019Antiokya d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui. Pour rendre cette intemporalit\u00e9, Alison Chitty a choisi de r\u00e9aliser le d\u00e9cor dans une mati\u00e8re rappelant la texture et la couleur d\u2019un caillou trouv\u00e9 lors de sa visite
