About
The two cantatas being performed this evening date from Handel’s visit to Italy as a young man, when Scarlatti was the unrivalled master of this genre (he had some eight hundred works in his catalogue). The cantata form was not originally intended for the stage, but Handel filled his scores with intense dramatic power, as if they were a prelude to his future operas. The orchestral ensemble is full of colour and the arias demand a high level of virtuosity from the performers.
