Beethoven’s Opus 101 is one of the final sonatas in which the musician takes writing for the piano to whole new levels of perfection and difficulty. Schumann composed his ‘Arabesque’ in Vienna in 1838, along with a number of other short piano pieces. Its graceful, light-hearted character is perhaps due to the fact that Schumann, as he himself wrote, wanted to ‘elevate himself to the rank of favourite composer of all Viennese women’... Nelson Goerner will round off the evening with pieces by Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Strauss.
